playing on gameranger and local lan Empty
PostSubject: playing on gameranger and local lan   playing on gameranger and local lan EmptySun Jul 29, 2012 12:55 pm

hi!

some of my friends and I just had the following scenario:

4 players (A,B,C,D) at location X and 1 player (E) at location Y.

the 4 players were connected through a separate router that had NO internet connection. additionally, A was connected to his home network, thus having internet. so: A,B,C,D were connected throug router B without internet, and A was having internet throug router A.

to play together, we thought of using gameranger with players A und E, and letting players B,C and D connect throug the local ip address, but this didn't work. without gameranger, A,B,C and D were able to play a game, and with gameranger only A and E were able to play. all the time, A did host the game.

what we tried so far:
we created a user.cfg file with the "OverrideAddress" argument in the startup folder of aomx. now, even with gameranger, aomx displays the local ip address as an alternative, but the locals still cannot connect.

any ideas of how we can get this working?

thanks for the help.

No need for override IP, I think you guys have your router in bridge mode? if it's configured in PPPoE mode you should have no problems. I connect to my friends on GR who play in a cyber without any problem.

BTW, is router B a network switch or a router? (just to be sure Razz) if it's a router, you'll prolly have to configure it as DHCP relay i think

hi,

i appreciate your feedback.

yes, router A is in bridged mode. pppoe mode isn't available.

router B is a real router with active DHCP within another ip range than the homenetwork of router A. router, because we didn't want to assign static ips with a switch. direct connection of router B to A with dhcp relay is not active on purpose, as I didn't want everyone to have access to my homenetwork.

but i think, i could live with it, if the game works.

so you say, just normal gameranger with 2 players and everyone within the local network of the host can join in?

thanks!

What you explained is 100% normal.

there are 2 ways of playing togeteher :
- all playing on the same local network (same IP range and all connected in the same workgroup/domain). So routers A and B have to be connected together.
- all playing via Internet with a virtual private network (VPN, like hamachi, openVPN...) or using a direct IP software (gameranger, voobly...).

so, to play LAN, connect routers A and B together.

To play on Internet, player A will have to keep connected to router A, get Internet from it, and share his Internet connection to the network connected to router B.
So, player A must have 2 NICs, one for each network.
the second NIC must be set manually with static IP. and players B,C,D must also be set manually.
Check on Internet but I think that players B,C,D gateway must be player A IP.
This way, everybody will have Internet.

The problem that may occur with gameranger is that only player A could have the UDP16000 port forwarded, the others may have the port restricted message. but the only way to check is to try it.

Good luck.
BTW, if u need help, add me on GR (my id on left side)
