SM: We can't say that any civ is best i think, it totally depends on what sort of enemy you got, and what strategies are used. (like already mentioned by Rage). Greek civs totally suck vs atty, as all their classical units are standard ones, while atty has counter units to those (and murmillos)
DM: Atty civs are a waste, while all greek/eggy civs are pretty cool. A highly skilled norse player may have good chances too (forget Odin ), but greek and eggy are easier.

You're argument is pretty bad, turma have short range and need to be micro'd in order to counter toxoses, cheiros are downright bad and expansive, so in reality atties can't really counter hoplites

Greek civs don't suck vs atty.Hippikons act as superb meatshield and the toxetes kill units faster and have long range.
murmillos actually are not good counters to hippikons without the meduim infantry and copper weapons upgrade. Katapeltes are better counter but people make murms because they cost less and train faster than katas. Infact turmas cannot hit the hippikons or centaurs correctly and atties don't have that fast heroes that can catch up with cents.

I hardly ever make murmillos in classical though, then again I don't face many greeks that make hoplites

i was speaking about the most important things that make a player choose between egies atties norse or greeks...
most egies players choose egies for their heroic units and mercenaries...
most atties players choose atties for their fast vllgrs and turma...
most norse players choose norse for their rushing strategy...

Why not mercenaries? Their forwarding (isis/ra) may win you games, as you get 20(?) of them in addition to your army... lategame only though. and its costly lol. they did a great service for me every time i was in a dogfight.

men mercenaries r like back bones of egyptian military...at both times even whn they r attacked or while they r attacking...they r free of pop capacity...with there tons of gold, egy plyrs spam thm like hell...

Those mercs are really annoying. Because of them its really hard to raid eggies trade compared to others.

When you are fighting non eggies, he has to take some of his military which are currently fighting somewhere else to defend his gold.
When you are fightin eggies, he can just train mercenaries though they take some time to arrive which is okay cause they are fast.

all to hypothetical anyways, he wastes well over 1k gold to stop 5 villagers from building walls

Those 5 villagers will build a huge wall and towers and kill all your caravans and who knows he may train ranged seige weapons and attack your town. So i think its worth it.

you should wall/protect your trade anyways, besides you can always delete the market and take the other corner

To me Mercs r like a bug or cheat in AOM cuz they r out of strategy games rules... It was better making them very expensive(150g infantry 200g cavelry) or die very fast(5secs) or just take pops. This at least will make eggies players think before spamming them like swarm
